Our usual Forza shuttles are unfortunately being discontinued, so we have started the process of choosing an alternative brand. Our criteria includes flight, durability, speed and of course, price and availability. Shuttles are by far the biggest expenditure in our small budget and the price of shuttles will continue to rise over the next few years. After extensive research, we have settled on trying 3 different suppliers choosing 3 different brands. In principle, the majority of our active members will have the chance to play with all 3 shuttles over the next few months. We will ask our members for their opinion and then we can make an informed decision.

On Sunday 16th of June a group of young players from Arion Badminton Club, Nicosia, arrived to join us at our hall in Emba. The 15 juniors and 3 coaches arrived around 11 o'clock to be joined by 15 of our own juniors. A full day of badminton training, technical and practical challenges as well as game practice was prepared by the Arion team. After an intense warm up with loud music playing, an agility and fitness session started. Then different groups were established based on age and ability, each group was assigned a number of technical and practical routines, making use of all 4 courts. The last activity was a round robin competition in each group. The day concluded on a high when 8 huge pizzas were delivered. It's fair to say everyone enjoyed the day.

On Saturday 15th of June we held another successful Fun Doubles Club tournament. With 24 club members ranging from 16 years to 67 years, it was a fun, fair and well organised tournament. Again this year, Paul had kindly devised a handicap system to ensure evenly balanced matches. The teams were selected randomly, the handicap system implemented and the game played with the first to 21 points. Each player played a minimum of 5 games, with all 4 courts in use, with a total of 8 rounds being played. Several well deserved breaks were taken as it was a very hot day. At the end of the 3 hours event, the two winning players were awarded a well earned refreshment to take home to share with their family.

Staying hydrated while playing badminton in warm weather is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and ensuring your overall well-being. At Emba Badminton Club in Paphos, where temperatures can rise significantly, it becomes even more important to stay adequately hydrated. Here are some tips to help you maintain hydration levels:
Drink water before, during, and after your badminton sessions. Start hydrating at least an hour before playing to give your body enough time to absorb the fluids.
Carry a water bottle with you and take regular sips during breaks or timeouts in the game.
Consider adding electrolytes to your water to replenish essential minerals lost through sweating.
Wear breathable clothing that allows sweat to evaporate, keeping your body cool. Avoid heavy fabrics that can retain heat and hinder the body's natural cooling process.
Remember, dehydration can impair your performance, lead to muscle cramps, and even pose health risks. By prioritizing hydration and taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy your badminton sessions in Cyprus' warm weather while keeping your body hydrated and healthy.

During the ordinary school year, our hall is being used for a number of different sports activities. However, now that the school year is coming to an end, we are making the most of our Emba Hall being available. On Saturday 15th of June we have scheduled a Fun Doubles Event for our Senior members. A similar event took place about 6 months ago, ably managed by Paul, who has volunteered for this event as well. We are looking forward to some 20 members joining the 3 hours fun event. Then, on Sunday 16th of June, we have a 6 hour Junior Event. Emba Badminton Club is welcoming young players from Arion in Nicosia and 3 of their coaches. We are organising a joint training and game practice day for 15 juniors, from each club, aged between 8 and 16. It will be a fun filled day, which gives our young players the opportunity to learn new skills, practice existing skills and indeed meet new friends.

We would like to send a warm 'thank you' to all our enthusiastic volunteers, who helped us demonstrate badminton during the recent school presentations. It was 6 very successful days during which everyone helped us create an interest and a curiosity about badminton with the youngsters. Our club has already seen an increased interest in our junior programme and several new requests for the initial free trials. Hopefully these new juniors will become regular members of our junior club or training group. Thanks to Foteini for offering this opportunity to us again this year. Thanks to Claire for coordinating the event, to Davy for his stewardship and to Tatjana for the new booking site and leaflet. All your efforts are very much appreciated.
As a non-profit, volunteer based club, we are always looking for new volunteers, for different areas, to help out making our club run smoothly. No special skills are required, just a bit of time and a lot of enthusiasm. If you are interested in finding out more about our club or indeed joining as a member, please use the contact form on the website.

On 28th of May our very successful Junior Club passed another milestone - its 2nd Anniversary. For the past year, we have seen a significant increase in the number of juniors enjoying badminton and social activities at our Club. With our two dedicated and enthusiastic coaches, Davy and Tatjana, firmly onboard and with the help of several regular volunteers, we are now able to offer an additional Club Session on Sundays as well as 2 dedicated Training Sessions. Currently we have 45+ juniors (age 7+) playing 1, 2 or 3 times a week, continuously improving their skills, their hand-eye coordination and their physical wellbeing. It's all designed to be fun and active - all taking place in a very safe and controlled environment. During the Summer period, we will actively be looking to arrange additional events such as fun tournaments, matches against other clubs and perhaps training camp/summer school. Please get in touch if you want to know more or would like to book a free trial.

All three Paphos based Badminton Clubs offer free trials for junior players aged 7+, no experience required, in an attempt to attract many more young players to participate in our region. One of our very enthusiastic coaches, Tatjana Obraztsov, has created a website to facilitate easy access for parents and their kids, who are interested in Badminton in Paphos. By scanning the above QR code or clicking the url https://badmintons.club interested visitors are invited to book a free trial on a suitable date and location. Jointly, we have also created a leaflet in Greek and English, which will be handed out during the School Presentations, shared online on various social media platforms as well as posted in shop windows and in other suitable locations.

On Saturday 18 May 2024 four of our juniors made the trip to Nicosia to take part in the Under 11 ‘Circuit’ Tournament. They were accompanied by our coaches Davy and Tatjana. It was, as usual, a long journey but we arrived in good time at the venue at Parnassos, Strovolos. A total of 25 children, representing 7 different clubs made up 47 entries across the 5 events. This was the first tournament for two of our juniors. Bo and Matheos really enjoyed the day and gained a lot of experience. Our ‘more experienced players’, Anatoliy and Zlata, played really well and were rewarded with semi-final places. Anatoliy’s was in the singles where he was beaten by the eventual winner. Zlata’s was in the girls doubles where she partnered Artemis from Arion Club,Nicosia. We arrived home safely after a great day out. Everyone is looking forward to the next event.

During the last 2 weeks of May the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth is hosting several sessions of various sport activities themed as 'Olympic Sports' at the Aphrodite Sport Hall in Paphos. Through their Primary Education Counsellor Foteini Massou, Emba Badminton Club has again been invited to demonstrate Badminton to hundreds of juniors. So far we have committed to 6 of the 10 dates, where we will be represented by one of our coaches as well as several of our Senior members, who have kindly volunteered to help. In close cooperation with the other 2 Paphos based Badminton clubs, we have created a joint leaflet in Greek and English, which will be handed out to interested juniors. This leaflet also celebrates the 40 year anniversary of the Cyprus Badminton Federation.

On Saturday 27th April, 34 of our Junior Club members took part in our Easter Fun Morning. They along with 20 adult club members and parent helpers took part in the 18 fun challenges devised and set up by the club coaches Davy and Tatjana. They were all different challenges requiring skill and concentration including backhand serving, hitting shuttle up, catching the shuttle inside a tube, shuttle pick up, coin stacker, hand walking the ladder and candy cane swing. All the challenges were devised to help hone their footwork skills, hand eye coordination and racquet skills whilst being fun for all.
All the Juniors were rewarded with Shuttlecock keyrings and most importantly of all an Easter egg. All the Juniors had a fantastic time and the club would like to thank all the helpers and Davy and Tatjana for this excellently run and fun morning.

We have recently seen a significant increase in membership numbers, with several potential new members now on our waiting list whilst we continue to receive new requests and interest in our club. As some of our weekday sessions are oversubscribed with nearly 30 players, we are now working to add more sessions to our senior programme. For this to be successful, we are looking to add new members, together with a consistent number of approximately 16-20 existing players, to join our new Monday session. For the past few weeks, we have been able to host this session at our existing hall. As from the 8th of April, we have rented the sportshall at the International School of Paphos, for a limited period, to facilitate the Monday evening session from 17:00-19:00. If you are interested in a free trial or indeed to sign up for the Monday evening session, please feel free to contact us.

Our training group, which started in November 2023 has been growing steadily. We have an enthusiastic group of children training regularly on Wednesday or Friday or both. Although it is primarily aimed at our club members, it is also a good opportunity to introduce new children to the sport, some of whom cannot fit into our normal club sessions at the weekend. We want to continue this growth and are ready to accept more children. If required, we are ready to start a new session so that we can maintain the quality of our coaching. We primarily grow by ‘word of mouth’ and recommendations though we will now actively promote our initiatives on social media. Please feel free to share our news and continue to speak to your friends, colleagues and neighbours about badminton and our club sessions and training

Well done to all who took part!

On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of March the Cyprus Badminton Federation invited juniors to take part in this year's U17 circuit. Harry, so as to gain more experience and improve, was keen to participate. Therefore, he signed up for all 3 categories, finding partners from other clubs in Cyprus. Harry partnered with JR from Cosmopolis in MD and Loli from Arion in XD. This was, of course, going to be a challenge for all 3 of them, but they all proved able to compete at this level. Day one was very successful with 7 wins out of 8 possible matches, thus both partnerships qualified for the semi finals. This was always going to be more difficult but achieving 3rd place in 2 categories was a very impressive achievement. Harry, so determined to improve, has now signed up to the M/W tournament on the 9th and 10th of March, which is going to be even more demanding. Harry's enthusiasm and determination is a great inspiration to everyone at Emba Badminton Club..

Recently, 22 young badminton players met for a joint fun filled four hour event for the first time. 14 juniors from Emba and 8 juniors from Atromitos played a series of double games, all designed to help them develop their skills, their competitiveness and experience the novelty of playing against new players in a different environment. It is the ambition of our club and coaches to give our youngest players the opportunity to feel part of a wider community of badminton enthusiasts. At the same time, having fun, making new friends and get a better understanding of how to improve their skills on the court. This event was kindly organised by our coaches Davy and Tatjana as well as Ovidjus, the coach of Atromitos. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and their commitment to engage with other clubs and coaches.

One of our members organised an informal evening at Okno Pool Hall straight after our Friday badminton session. As the Pool Hall was only opened recently and less than a five minute drive, members were invited to come along for a drink and a chat and try out the pool tables. There was a good turnout and though some hadn't played in a while and, indeed, several people never having played pool before, most decided to join in on a couple of games of 'Killer' Pool. Simple rules; everyone starts with three lives and the objective is to take it in turns to pot a ball of any colour. If you don't pot a ball, you lose a life until there is one person left 'alive'. The winner of the first round was Daniel and the second round was won by Jonathan. This was followed by a three against three game of pool, narrowly won by Julie, Colin and Jonathan.Everyone enjoyed the chance to mix and agreed they had a good time and looked forward to another evening being arranged in the near future. As Okno also has a section with several dart boards, it was agreed that next time darts would also be included.

This year, two of our young talented players, Zlata and Anatoliy, were still eligible to play in the U11 Masters Tournament held in Nicosia on January 27. We recognise that participation in tournaments is one of the components of development both as an athlete and a person. The two youngsters went to the tournament to apply their skills and dedication, not quite knowing what to expect. Both were a bit worried and just hoping for a decent result. During the 2 hour journey to the tournament, they cheerfully and fervently composed poems about themselves and badminton. Both Zlata and Anatoliy got off to a good start, both tasted victory in the very first games. Anatoliy finished second in his group and therefore progressed to the semifinals. The semifinal was not easy, as, by this time, he was exhausted and was playing the number 1 seed and eventual winner. Both players really enjoyed the experience and want to progress further, so we look forward to more success from them and other players in the future.

An invitation from Olga at Parnassos Badminton Club went out to all badminton clubs to kick-start the season inviting everyone to take part in the first tournament in Cyprus of the New Year! The tournament was for both Men and Women (Doubles) and Mixed Doubles. The event was designed to focus on all badminton enthusiasts, such as veterans, amateurs (beginners and advanced) and everyone who is not a professional player. It turned out to be a very successful all day event with a total of 26 teams in MD, 12 teams in WD and 26 teams in XD, 90 players, representing 10 clubs across Cyprus. The first match was played at 09:30 on Sunday 14th of January and the last final completed the day at 19:00 in the evening - in total some 180 matches were played on the day. It was a lot of fun and Olga states that Parnassos sincerely hopes everyone enjoyed the day and they look forward to hosting similar events in the future.

We are very proud to present Anastasiia and Tatjana with their well deserved Coaching Certificates for successfully completing the intense course in October and subsequently passing the required exams and relevant tests. They have both studied exceedingly hard and both show a lot of dedication and want to apply their newly gained knowledge and expand on the theory taught and put it into practice. We are delighted that they have both engaged with new initiatives at Emba Badminton Club. Tatjana is involved with setting up a Junior Training Section, which is designed to explain and teach the intricate elements of footwork, shot selection and tactics and to prepare our most enthusiastic juniors for tournaments . Anastasiia is instrumental in providing coaching to the new members of our club, who have not played badminton before, providing basic racket skills, on court etiquettes, grip and shot selection providing a better foundation to improve and enjoy the game fully. Both initiatives are very successful and a great help to the continued success of our club. Well done to both of them.

With the addition of several new members, who are new to badminton or have limited experience, it was decided to provide some informal training. At the same time, Anastasiia, one of our valued members, had just completed the Level 1 coaching course and was keen to bring her new knowledge and experience into practice. In partnership with Paul, who is one of our very experienced players, they decided to offer a 4 session training programme to our members for free. Immediately, several members signed up and Wave One has just been successfully completed with an overwhelming positive response from the attendees. They all commented that it was extremely beneficial, gave them excellent exercises on grips and footwork, and the opportunity to practice various shots and sequences. It will most certainly help them enjoy their games more and give them the opportunity to continue to improve. The next group of 4 attendees will be scheduled as soon as possible

On Saturday 30th December, Emba Badminton Club hosted the last tournament of 2023, which was a Fun Doubles for our Club Members. For the first time, a handicap system was devised based on experience and level of play. A head start between 1-8 points was given in some cases, which made each match more competitive. Each team and their opponents were all randomly selected and the accumulation of points from each match was recorded to find the worthy winners. With 20 participants, all players enjoyed 10 rounds over the 3 hours and efforts were helped and energy level was replenished by sausage rolls, chocolate and bananas. A very big thank you to Paul, who managed the day brilliantly as our referee and warm congratulations to our two winners Tanya and Harry - well done to both of them.

Again, our Junior Club members enjoyed a festive celebration and fun games during our Christmas Special. The event, held on Saturday 23rd of December, saw the enthusiastic participation of 23 young club members aged from 7 years to 15 years. Probably, the highlight of the day was the jolly appearance of Santa Claus herself, who not only brought smiles to the faces of the young participants but also distributed goodie bags filled with surprises and treats. Our most recent members received their well deserved club T-shirts as part of our efforts to make them feel they belong. As the year draws to a close, the Junior Club continues to nurture a spirit of fun, friendship, and festive cheer amongst our young members. From the first weekend of January we will add another club session on Sunday mornings from 08:30-10:00. This in order to meet the high demand and interest from many new members.

We are delighted to announce that from the 6th of December we will add 2 new focused training sessions and from the 7th of January one extra club session to our Junior Programme

The love of badminton and the desire to improve their skills prompted several of our juniors to participate in the U11 Cyprus National Championships held in Nicosia on Saturday 4th of November. The goal was to see how the tournament was organized, watch the athletes from different clubs and experience the competitive atmosphere. As our juniors have only played for a short time and had no focused training, we didn't expect any victories. However, everyone was very happy when one of our juniors won their first round singles. All our juniors found it interesting to experience the difference of playing singles, level doubles and mixed doubles. After each game, our juniors shared their impressions, discussed interesting moments, learned to respect their opponent's skills, and supported each other. In addition, they all had the opportunity to volunteer to keep the score of the games of other players. In the initial stage of this tournament, umpires were not provided so the atmosphere was not so strict, it was relaxed and friendly - a good way to ease our juniors into the more competitive atmosphere later on. Thanks to the coach, the club and parents for supporting this initiative. It was a great day full of impressions and new experiences. The participants are serious about improving their skills and look forward to the next opportunity to compete.

We are very excited to introduce extra hours for both our senior members and for our junior club.
As a committee we have worked hard to secure additional hours. We launched the Sunday am session on Sunday 22nd of October which was attended by 18 members. As the hall was required for a volleyball match, there was no badminton after 1pm. On Sunday the 28th, we had 3 blocks of 3 hour sessions to include seniors, juniors, and private practice for our 2 aspiring 15 year old members, who are practicing for a national and an international tournament later in the season.
The Sunday sessions will continue to be evolving to best suit our requirements for more training, coaching, open day, tournaments and general club sessions.
This is a very positive step for Emba Badminton Club and we hope these extra hours may attract new members.

On Friday 27th of October our Annual General Meeting took place at the Emba Badminton Hall.
Our members joined the meeting at 2pm to get a general update from our Chair about the continued success of our club, which is largely down to our very enthusiastic and active members. As a volunteer based and non-profit organisation, our Treasurer gave a quick update on our financial situation. Our junior club has flourished over the last few months, so a quick update was given and a big thank you was extended to our coach Davy, all volunteers, parents and indeed members.
The existing committee explained that legalities and regulations are getting ever more complex and time consuming. A presentation was given on the expectations for our club during the next 12 months. During the general discussions, several good ideas were brought forward by our members. Finally, two of the existing committee stepped down and a new committee was elected comprising four members of the existing committee plus two new members.
A big thank you to all our members for joining in and making Emba Badminton Club such an enjoyable place to play badminton.

As our junior club has flourished over the last few months, lots of new members have joined our club sessions. In order to help everyone get to know each other on court and off court, it was decided to organise another outing in our calendar of social events, like we did earlier in the Summer where our juniors enjoyed pizza and bowling.
This time the event was Kayaking, which was expertly organised by Zephyros Events and took place on Sunday 22nd of October. The programme for the day was snorkeling and kayaking with all the appropriate equipment and safety instruction as well as practical exercises on land and in the water. All the juniors were in very capable hands with the helpful instructors.
A very warm thank you to Tatjana and Davy for organising this very enjoyable day full of adventure for all participants including some parents, who are now eager to try kayaking themselves.
A fun day for all.

In an effort to prepare our young badminton players for the upcoming U11 National tournament, Emba Badminton Club and Cosmopolis worked closely together to set up a fun tournament in a relaxed environment. This event took place in Limassol on Saturday 21st of October.
Five different badminton clubs from Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca were invited to attend and in total 22 young promising athletes took part in this all day event. Emba Badminton Club was represented by 14 juniors, 5 of whom are preparing to join the U11 Nationals in Nicosia on 4th of November. As our coach Davy explained: ‘All our players are new to badminton, they are all very young and eager to learn and improve. These sort of events not only improve their skills on court, they are essential for mental preparation to join tournaments where each point will be hard fought. Finally, it is a fantastic way to enhance teamwork and get to know other young players from other clubs'.
A big thank you to Chendra for hosting this event.
Let’s create more fun events like this together.

The Cyprus Badminton Federation invited potential coaches to a coaching course as part of the
development of badminton in Cyprus. Two of our younger members, who have also enrolled
their children in our junior club, joined this 4 day coaching course taking place in Nicosia from
12-15 of October. It was a very intensive course, 7 hours each day, with a significant amount
of reading material and each training session conducted at a very focused level. It was a very
enjoyable experience for both participants as they got to know other badminton enthusiasts and
were surrounded by real top level players and coaches. This new experience was partly funded
by our junior club as we are keen to push forward with more training and more hours for our
aspiring juniors. We strongly encourage more initiatives like this and we continue to look for
volunteers to join in and make our club have even stronger links with the Federation and
badminton clubs in Cyprus.

The European-sponsored 'Be Active' week is gaining momentum in our local communities. This year Emba Badminton Club was invited to promote badminton to 200 school children in Paphos at local primary schools. Initiatives like this play an important role in promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. The benefits of such initiatives go beyond just physical health; they also promote teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. It's encouraging to see the dedication of organisations and individuals working together to create these opportunities for children. Hopefully, more and more young people will be motivated to lead active and healthy lives and join Emba Badminton Club – all promoted thanks to programmes like 'Be Active' week.

This is indeed the recipe for Geoff Bond, who celebrates his 80th birthday this month. A dedicated badminton enthusiast, Geoff continues to step onto the court three times a week, displaying agility, determination, and the spirit of a true sportsman.

Several of our members have - for some time - asked for focused coaching. With our Junior Coach now firmly on the ground, he has spent some time watching our players and getting an understanding of how to best improve each individual. It is a great addition that we are now able to offer specific Senior Coaching during two intensive sessions per week for 6 consecutive weeks. The first session took place last week and the feedback from our members is excellent. The coaching is very well structured and covers footwork, shot selection and appropriate execution. It will aim at building confidence, skills and negating some of the 'bad habits' developed over the years. Good luck to Davy and his enthusiastic 'students'.

Again, this year Emba Badminton Club opens the doors and welcomes enthusiastic holiday makers who wish to join one of our sessions. 4 courts are available and usually 16 players will enjoy some great doubles games. We are a fun and sociable club and our members are happy to include all standards into their games, to make it fair and fun for all. We offer a flexible rate and have spare rackets to lend to visitors. If you are interested, please get in touch. If you decide to come along, please bring non-marking shoes and plenty of water, the sessions are hot now.

It was a great pleasure for Emba Badminton Club to host the Regional Open on Saturday 1st of July. It was a very hot 9 hours event, attended by 5 different clubs, 42 group stage matches and 16 finals (including quarter and semis) were played. More than 250 liters of fluids (mostly water) and 10 XL pizzas were consumed. Some players played in 3 different categories totalling 12 matches, some going the distance of 3 games. Some old friendly rivalries were ignited, new rivalries created, some players have played together for a long time, others were teaming up for the very first time, some players had never met their partner before and new friendships were made. It was a great day, a lot of fun and all games were fought with a lot of enthusiasm and fairness.

Due to the Regional Open on Saturday 1st of July hosted by Emba Badminton Club, we had to cancel our Junior Training Session. With the Summer, hot weather, holiday and travels around the corner, it was a good opportunity to have a social event for all involved in our Junior programme. 12 juniors, 5 parents / volunteers and our coach enjoyed a relaxed and fun atmosphere and a serious amount of pizza before walking across to Cosmic Bowling for an extra bit of enjoyment. It was such a joy watching the juniors chatting and laughing and we will most certainly do this again sometime soon. Now we all look forward to going back on court and learning some more badminton techniques next Saturday.

Whilst we are busy preparing for the Regional Tournament at Emba Badminton Club taking place on Saturday 1st of July, Cosmopolis Badminton Club in Limassol took advantage of an opening in the otherwise busy tournament schedule and invited all clubs to send teams of 5-6 players of mixed standards to take part in a fun doubles tournament. All players then entered a draw and 'new' teams were formed. This meant that everyone got to play with partners from other clubs and got to know other players in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. 6 players from Emba took part and all enjoyed the experience in this well organised event, which was indeed a creative and fun way to mix players and to involve all standards of play. Thank you to Ben, Charlie, Harry, Kyle, Lee and Tharul for representing EBC in this event. Well done to everyone who took part in this fun format tournament.

Today the 28th of May marks the 1 year anniversary of our re-launched Junior Badminton Club. With the help and dedication of our senior members, we initially hosted an Open Day event which was attended by some 10 juniors. Going from strength to strength, we now have a steady group of 16-20 regular juniors who enjoy many fun badminton related games, with and without rackets, during our Saturday morning sessions. As a surprise to all our juniors, we arranged for the Ice Cream Van to be at our Car Park yesterday for 10:00 when our session concluded - juniors, parents and senior members were treated to a nice soothing ice cream on this warm sunny day. A big 'Thank you' to Rambo Ice Cream for making the special journey yesterday

Paphos Primary Schools have been taking part in multiple sports presentations orgainsed by the Cyprus Ministry of Education over a 12 day period. Emba Badminton Club were invited to take part in the exercise, by the Cyprus Badminton Federation and were one of eight sports represented at the Aphrodites Sports Arena. Emba's Junior Coach and six volunteers from the club show cased badminton to eight groups of 15 enthusiastic 11 year olds each day. The children were eager to learn new skills and after only a short time were all successfully hitting the shuttles back over the net to the volunteers. Through the Federation in Nicosia, we received an invitation from the Ministry of Education for our club to present Badminton to school children in May. As Wendy - our Chairperson explains - this is a great opportunity for us to promote and make more children aware of the sport of Badminton and its availability in the Paphos region. At Emba, we have committed to demonstrate our sport during 4 different sessions. Our junior coach Davy will be in charge of the various exercises and programme for each session, with the help of dedicated volunteers from our senior section of the club. The demonstration will take place at the Aphrodite Sports Center in Paphos during which 25 children from 5th grade will get an introduction to badminton and other sports. We look forward to participating in this initiative and hope to get more young children interested in our preferred sport.

During the last two weekends our two young players Harry and Tharul - 14 and 15 years old - have been travelling across Cyprus to play badminton. Firstly, they represented Emba at the Cosmopolis Challengers Tournament in Limassol, which was of a very high standard attended by some of the top national players in Cyprus. They agreed to treat this tournament as a WarmUp event prior to the Aetoi U17, which took place on the weekend of 5th/6th of May. What is very impressive about both young players is that they enjoy the challenges, they join in with a lot of enthusiasm and they keep asking for ways to improve. Let's hope they stay focused and keep up their high spirits.

Friday 21st April was the first of the three day tournament for the Under 19’s Badminton International held in Nicosia. The tournament was attended by teams from 21 countries with a high standard of Badminton being played by all.
The tournament referee was by Julien Nys from Belgium ably assisted by match controller Conor Flatley and an 11 strong team of umpires. One of the Umpires was Emba’s Claire Levick who recently attended the Umpire Seminar held at Emba. Claire said ‘it was a great experience being able to put all that she had learned into practice. A high level of concentration was required but it was good to see such a high level of play and camaraderie between all the teams. She added that she looks forward to umpiring at more tournaments in the future.’
The event was also, prestigiously attended by the President and Committee members from the Cyprus Olympic Committee. It was the ideal opportunity to further build on the relationship and to showcase the popularity of the sport here in Cyprus

A very warm welcome to Davy Rodgers, who has agreed to join Emba Badminton Club as our new Junior Coach. With Davy's immense experience, ability and down to earth approach, this is great news for the continuation of our programme. As a non-profit organisation, we rely upon a committed group of volunteers to help out at each training session. During the past year, we have established a loyal team to support our juniors and coupled with Davy's approach and input we look forward to further development. Our Junior Club continues to be popular and we have reached maximum capacity. This means we now have a waiting list for any new juniors who wish to join our club. Please get in touch if you wish to sign up for the next open space in our junior programme.

On Saturday 8th April four members from Paphos and Limassol took part in an Umpire Training seminar. The seminar was hosted by Emba Badminton Club and was carried out by Savvas Christofidis from Nicosia. In preparation all participants were advised to familiarise themselves with updated regulations, policies, guidelines and procedures as the seminar is conducted within the BWF rules framework. Primary focus during this 3 ½ hours seminar was on match procedures, on-court situations and completion of score sheet. This specific training is in anticipation of the International Junior Under 19 tournament to be held in Nicosia between 21st and 23rd April. Good luck to our newly trained Umpires at their first tournament. Their acquired skills will come in handy as the Federation are hosting several high profiled tournaments during the calendar year.

We are thrilled with the increased cooperation with the Federation and the general support that we continue to receive. As part of our efforts to help out, we are actively looking for volunteers amongst our enthusiastic members to join the 'International Cyprus Junior 2023 Tournament' as either Umpires or Line Judges. This tournament takes place in Nicosia from 21-23 of April. It is important that Umpires have a basic knowledge of the rules, know the essential vocabulary and are able to complete a score sheet. Therefore, all 3 badminton clubs in Paphos have been invited to join the upcoming seminar on this subject. Savvas Christofides from the Technical Committee will be visiting Paphos from Nicosia on Saturday 8th of April to host this Umpire Seminar at Emba Badminton Club from 8.30 till 12 pm.

A normal training shoe will not give your feet the correct support they need for playing Badminton.
It is beneficial to invest in a good pair of badminton court shoes. They will provide you with the correct support for the rapid changes in direction needed when playing Badminton.
Remember, never wear your badminton shoes outside the hall, always change into your court shoes before playing, and change them before leaving the hall

For the past week during all three senior sessions, we have tested Forza Hybrid Shuttles. The overall feedback is that the flight and trajectory is very similar and the feathers don't break but get fluffy, which then slows down the flight and more effort is required to clear the shuttle. Each shuttle lasts a bit longer but not significantly. It's been a fun and worthwhile exercise and we appreciate all the input and feedback we've had from our members. Some other time, we may choose to try a different brand of hybrid shuttles, but for now we have decided to continue with the standard Forza shuttles during our training sessions.

With an influx of new members to our club, we often get asked these questions - which racket is the best, how much do I have to pay, what should I be looking for and where can I get a decent racket that doesn't break the bank??? Racket choice is always difficult, it depends on your style of play and your personal preference. Maybe you will be inspired and hopefully a little wiser by watching the video. Enjoy!

Thanks to the dedication and vast experience of our Coach Don, we have been able to offer 'Free Adult Coaching' for a limited period of time. Each session is scheduled to last one hour (Friday 4-5pm) with 4 members on one court. This allows Don to tailor the training according to the existing level of ability. A total of 12 juniors and 4 adults, divided into a number of appropriate groups, competed in a fun badminton competition at Emba on Saturday December 17th. With club members assisting with organising the games and with scoring, the spectators were treated to a number of exciting and close matches. For an hour the players battled it out for hard fought points until the eventual winners emerged. Gold and silver medals were presented to the first and second players in each group whilst every junior member of the club received an Emba badminton t-shirt. There was a special presentation and a huge round of applause for coach Don for organising the event and a huge thanks must go to all the players, volunteers and spectators who helped make the event such a huge success.

One of our young players, Harry, took part in the recent U17 national tournament in Nicosia. With 30 boys signed up for singles and many of them a few years older and with more experience than Harry, we all knew this was going to be a challenging event. As usual, Harry put in an enormous amount of effort and we are very proud of Harry for making it to the Quarter Finals. You certainly can keep your head held high. Well Done, Harry!
